Do You Annoy Yourself? ©2007 Take the Lid Off Inc

How often do you feel annoyed with yourself because you made a choice, and then did something different than what you had decided? “Behavior not matching choice occurs in conversations, in eating patterns, and in habitual behaviors like nail-biting and smoking,” states Self-Mastery expert Patricia Wall. Wall attributes these contradictions to the influence of the subconscious mind.

“Decisions are made at the cognitive level,” Wall explains. “That’s the rational part of the brain. Behavior comes from the subconscious.”

Damage to self-esteem, loss of confidence in ability to make change, and depression can all be caused by lack of awareness of subconscious influence. “When people don’t understand that a cognitive decision cannot change a behavior, they may feel incompetent, frustrated with themselves, even stupid or hopeless,” states Wall.

A Health Canada study suggests that depression and distress cost Canadians at least $14.4 billion annually in treatment, medication, lost productivity and premature death. Depression symptoms such as self-judgment, lack of energy and sadness are prime candidates for self-mastery, which works with body chemistry. “Everyone has self-judgment,” states Wall. “The diagnosis of depression is about the degree of loss of function, and the severity of the chemical effects.”

Not all decisions are in conflict with the subconscious, so the effect is not obvious or consistent in behaviors. Wall teaches how to identify subconscious influence, and change the triggering programs that affect behavior, in Self-Mastery workshops. “It’s a huge relief to understand why it’s happening, so that you can make real change,” Wall admits.

Ongoing self-judgment can easily slip over the line from dissatisfaction to real depression. 1 in every 5 women and 1 in every ten men will be affected by depression, so stopping the spiral of discontent is a powerful personal change.
